No Seeds Bloom Overnight

It is easy to admire the beauty of a lush English garden, full of color, abundance, and life. But even the best gardeners know that growth is rarely simple. It takes trial and error: choosing what is in season, finding the right soil, planting at the right depth, and giving each seed the right balance of water and sunlight. Then they check, adjust, and wait. They learn to be intentional. More seeds do not always mean more growth. Sometimes they simply mean more to manage. Real growth asks us to be patient, thoughtful, and realistic about what we are trying to cultivate.

In my own experience of planting literal seeds, I know I will either end up with a garden or a graveyard. More often than not, I am left staring at a dry, brittle patch of failed sprouts. It can be discouraging, but it is also a reminder that failure is not the end of the process. At best, it is insight. Something needs adjustment. I might be tempted to compare my failed garden to the beautiful gardens at Kensington, but I cannot pretend to know the care, patience, and persistence it took to create them. I also cannot know how many sprouts never bloomed, how many plans had to be revised, or how much had to be returned to the soil before something beautiful could grow in its place.

Spring reminds us to trust the process. Growth takes care, patience, and a willingness to begin again. Not every seed will bloom, and not every effort will work the way we hoped, but that does not mean progress is not happening. It is also a reminder not to measure our own growth against someone else’s garden, because each season, each seed, and each journey unfolds in its own time. Sometimes the lesson is in the tending. Sometimes the beauty comes later. My hope is that this spring season is fruitful in more ways than one, and that whatever you are planting in your own life receives the time and care it needs to grow.
